From his account:
My immigrant Clodfelter family started with John Peter Glattfelter, baptized on 30 June 1700 at Glattfelden, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. On 23 Nov. 1721 he married Salome Amberg, b. ca. 1703. To this union were b.: Elizabeth b. 14 June 1723; Barbara, b. 12 Aug. 1725; Felix b. 2 Feb. 1727; Hans Rudolf, b. 25 Mar. 1731; Magdalena, b. 29 Nov. 1733, and Casper b. 17 July 1740. This list was supplied by Rev. Juggli (pastor of the church) and does not agree with the passenger list.
In 1743 John Peter and his brother Casper started to America. On 21 Apr. 1742, as the group started to Basil, John Peter d. and the families returned to Glattfelden. The next year Uncle Casper with his family and that of John Peter’s arrived at Philadelphia on 30 Aug. 1743. The families settled in York County, Pa., where the family of Casper largely retained the Glattfelter spelling. Annual reunions are still held at what was called Glattfelter Station in 1956 when I first visited the site where Casper Lived.
Solomae Berg Glattfelder probably d. in York Co. and likely was bur. in the Bupp Cem. with a dau. I have information on only 4 of the 6 children. On 18 Nov. 1750 Elizabeth m. Jacob Rein (1729-1794). In 1748 Barbara m. Johannes Hilderbrand, who was b. 1715 in Switzerland and d. 2 Apr. 1783. Barbara d. 8 Aug. 1794 and was buried beside her husband in Bupp Cem. Springfield Twp. York Co. They had 6 children: Felix, Maria M., Dorthea, John J. Casper, and Henrich.
The two brothers, Felix and Rudolph, settled in what is now Davidson Co., Where Glattfelder surname became Clodfelter. On 25 Oct. 1750 Felix m., in York Co. Pa., Maria Sarah Meier, dau. Of John George and Sybilla Meier, Baptismal records of 6 children were in the county: John b. 18 Aug. 1751; Anna Maria b. 22 July 1753; Dorthea, b. 6 July 1755; George ( Rev. War Vet.) b. 9 Oct 1757; Susanna, b. 25 Jan. 1761; John Peter b. 17 Apr. 1763. The family settled in Davidson Co. in the vicinity of Bethany Church. Here Jacob was b. 1 Jan. 1770. The tombstones in the Bethany Cem. give these dates for Felix; 2 Feb. 1727 (Zurich) and 18 Jan. 1814 and for “Sarah Glatfeltern”: 1731 (Wurtenburg) and 23 Nov. 1813.
My 3rd generation grandparents, Rudolph Clodfelter and Veronica Hitsberger were married 21 Apr. 1767 (record in the First Reformed Church at Lancaster, Pa.). Rudolph appears on the 1782 and 1785 tax lists of Va. In the Conicville region, Shenandoah Co. On 2 Nov. 1787 Phillip Koontz (Rowan Co. Deeds, Bk 12:362) for 50 pounds sold to Randolph Clodfelter 190 acres lying on the south side Hambys Creek and Stoney Runn and touching land of Charles Byrns and Shivers. On 24 Aug. 1804 (Bk. 19:351), Rudolph sold this land for 200 to his sons (see Bk. 22:660) Jacob and John (my ancestors) with the provision that they could not sell it during his lifetime. Since Rudolph does not appear in the 1810 census he must have d. before then. Veronica may have been the woman 45 upward in the household of Jacob.
Based on various census for 1782 to 1830 the family of Rudolph consisted of at least 5 sons and 1 or more daus. I have identified on 1 dau., Ann Clodfelter, m. Charles Leason Byrn, son of Charles and Ann Byrn, b. ca. 1775-7 d. in 1837 in Harrison Co., Ind. It has been claimed that this Ann was the Anna Catharine dau. of Johann Jorg Klatfelder (Pilgrim Record) b 10 Apr. 1783. However, she is not mention in the will (1837) of John George nor are her children. Ann based on the 1800 Rowan Co. census George’s dau. would have been young for 3 children. Rudolph’s Ann was b. ca 1775-80. The 1790 census has a George Clodfelter, age 16-25 listed next to Rudolph. He does not show later but his widow, Mary is probably the one in the 1810 census. Based on deeds and land locations, the following were sons of Rudolph: Peter, b. ca. 1770; Elias (left a will) b. ca. 1775; Jacob (left a will) b. 1781-90; John my ancestor, b. 11 Sept. 1782 (Prayer Book in Butler Un., Indianapolis, Ind.)in Va., and d. 19 Aug. 1831 in Russell Tep., Putnam Co., Ind. M. ca. 1806 Catherine, a dau. of Jacob Bowers, b. 20 Mar. 1788 perhaps in N.V. and d. in Russell Twp. On 25 July 1851. They left 9 children: Solomon (1807-1889); Elizabeth 1810-1889; David (1812-1882, Iowa); Willism (1815-1896 Ore.); Matthias (1817-1881); Sarah (1820-1859); Noah (1823-1859); John (1825-1862, Mo.), and Katherine (1824-1864).
